Dry Needling
What is Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is a modern therapy that uses sterilized acupuncture needles that do not inject any fluid into the body to target trigger points, muscular tension and stimulate healing. This methodology acts to increase circulation to promote repair of soft tissue. Sterile needles are used only once.
Our modern lifestyle of this day and age means we are fairly sedentary compared to our ancestors. As a result of this we have developed postural and muscular imbalances, these imbalances form trigger points, commonly referred to as a knot. These trigger points can be a result of underactive or overactive muscles that are trying to compensate for other imbalances.
With the use of Dry Needling and careful assessment, these needles will be inserted into these trigger points to help stimulate a response and initiate a healing process for movement impairments and neuromusculoskeletal pain. The thin monofilament needles used in dry needling therapy impact the electrical and chemical communications taking place in the nervous system including transmission of pain signals to the spinal cord while increasing the pain relieving chemicals within the brain.

Is Dry Needling Different From Acupuncture?
Yes. This needling therapy is based on inserting the needles into trigger points to release muscular tensions and work on neuromuscular points. Acupuncture is based on the principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine where needles are inserted into specific organ meridian points that aim to stimulate energy flow around the body.
Almost similar needles are used in both the treatments, but the similarity ends right there. Dry needling is given by different practitioners who’ve had a different training than acupuncture specialists. While the former is based on western medicine, the latter has its roots in eastern medicine.
