Neck pain is the second most common musculoskeletal complaint we see — affecting patients across all age groups and occupations in South West Sydney. From the student hunched over a phone to the tradie whose neck has taken years of punishment, neck pain is widespread — and widely undertreated.
The cervical spine is a complex structure of seven vertebrae, intervertebral discs, joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. When any one of these structures becomes dysfunctional or irritated — whether from posture, injury, or accumulated stress — the result is often pain, stiffness, restricted movement, and frequently, headaches.
Most neck pain responds very well to chiropractic care. The key is understanding what’s driving it.
Neck pain with severe headache, arm weakness, or loss of coordination requires urgent medical assessment.
The most common cause of neck pain in South West Sydney today is sustained poor posture — particularly forward head posture from screen use, driving, and phone use. For every centimetre the head moves forward from its neutral position, the effective load on the cervical spine increases significantly. Over hours and years, this accumulates into chronic neck pain and stiffness.
The small facet joints of the cervical spine can become restricted or irritated — causing localised pain that is often sharp and position-dependent. Chiropractic adjustments directly address facet joint dysfunction.
Cervical disc bulges or herniations can compress nerve roots exiting the spine, causing neck pain, shoulder pain, and referred symptoms down the arm — including numbness, tingling, and weakness.
Sustained tension in the neck, upper trapezius, and suboccipital muscles creates trigger points that cause local and referred pain — including tension-type headaches. Dry needling and deep tissue massage are highly effective for this presentation.
Sudden acceleration-deceleration injuries — from motor vehicle accidents, falls, or contact sport — can cause complex cervical injuries involving joints, discs, muscles, and ligaments simultaneously.
Poor sleeping posture and unsupportive pillows are one of the most overlooked contributors to chronic neck pain. Dr Yahya will discuss your sleeping setup as part of your assessment.
