The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body — and that mobility comes at the cost of stability. It is a complex structure involving the glenohumeral joint, the acromioclavicular joint, the rotator cuff muscles, the bicep tendon, the bursa, and the cervical and thoracic spine that supply it neurologically.
Shoulder pain is extremely common — affecting patients of all ages from heavy manual workers and athletes to desk workers and people who sleep on the same side every night. It is also frequently mismanaged — treated as a simple muscle problem when the underlying cause involves the joint, tendon, or nerve supply.
At Bonnyrigg Chiropractic, Dr Yahya takes a comprehensive assessment approach to shoulder pain — addressing the joint, soft tissue, and cervical spine together for the most effective outcome.
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that stabilise the shoulder joint. Tears, tendinopathy, and strain are among the most common shoulder presentations — occurring from sports, sudden loading, or cumulative overuse. Partial tears and tendinopathy respond very well to chiropractic care and rehabilitation.
When the space between the rotator cuff and the acromion narrows during shoulder movement, the soft tissue structures are pinched — causing pain with lifting and overhead activity. Very common in overhead athletes, tradies, and gym-goers.
Progressive stiffening of the shoulder capsule causing severe restriction of movement in all directions. A complex and often prolonged condition that benefits from early intervention.
The acromioclavicular joint — at the top of the shoulder — can be sprained or separated in falls and contact sport. A common presentation in football, rugby, and martial arts.
Bicep tendinopathy or rupture causes pain at the front of the shoulder and weakness with lifting and forearm rotation.
Shoulder pain is frequently referred from the cervical or upper thoracic spine — with no actual shoulder pathology. Treating the neck resolves the shoulder pain in these cases. This is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in shoulder pain management.
Shoulder pain is particularly prevalent in South West Sydney among tradies, warehouse workers, gym-goers, and athletes in football, cricket, basketball, and martial arts. Dr Yahya has extensive experience treating the full spectrum of shoulder presentations — from acute sports injuries to chronic impingement and rotator cuff degeneration.
