Tech neck — also called text neck or forward head posture — is one of the fastest-growing musculoskeletal problems in Australia. It describes the pattern of cervical and thoracic dysfunction that develops from sustained forward head positioning during screen use, phone use, and desk work.
For every centimetre the head moves forward from its neutral position, the effective weight on the cervical spine increases significantly — from 5kg in neutral to over 25kg at 45 degrees of forward flexion. Over hours per day and years of cumulative use, this creates chronic joint restriction, muscle imbalance, and eventually — pain.
Postural problems extend beyond the neck. Rounded shoulders, thoracic kyphosis, anterior pelvic tilt, and flat lower back are all common postural patterns that create pain, dysfunction, and long-term spinal loading problems.
Postural correction requires more than just exercises — the underlying joint restriction and muscle imbalance needs to be treated first. At Bonnyrigg Chiropractic:
Joint mobility, muscle strength and length assessment — identifying the imbalances driving your postural pattern.
Understanding your daily screen use, workstation setup, and habits that are perpetuating the problem.
Targeted joint treatment, soft tissue therapy, and a progressive postural rehabilitation program.
Tech neck is now one of the most common presentations across all demographics in South West Sydney — students, office workers, parents, and teenagers alike. The prevalence of long commutes combined with high daily screen use creates a perfect storm for cervical spine loading in our community.
Dr Yahya has been treating postural dysfunction since 2014 and has seen a significant increase in tech neck presentations across Fairfield, Liverpool, Cabramatta and surrounding suburbs over the last decade.
Serving Bonnyrigg, Fairfield, Liverpool, Cabramatta, Wetherill Park, Bossley Park and Smithfield — South West Sydney.
